City on the Middle Tisza, Szolnok sees its Jews led to a disused sugar factory converted into a gathering camp, where communities from the county also converge, before the summer convoys.
Szolnok, a railway hub on the Tisza, held a community that lived by the grain trade and occupations linked to transportation. After the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the town and the county were gathered in the disused sugar refinery on the outskirts, converted into a camp, where the Jews of the neighboring towns were also brought. From this camp, in early summer, the convoys departed: some toward Austria, others toward the extermination center in Upper Silesia.
