City of western Macedonia on the edge of its lake, Kastoria sees its Romaniote community, one of the oldest in the country, arrested one spring morning and taken by trucks to the neighboring large city, then by convoy to the extermination camp.
Kastoria, on its lake in western Macedonia, was home to a very ancient Romaniote community, whose families lived from the fur trade, a craft that had made the city's renown. It had preserved its own customs, its synagogues, and its quarter by the water's edge. In the spring, the Germans gathered the Jews of Kastoria, held them briefly, then transported them to Salonika and from there to the extermination center of the Gouvernement général. The community, one of the oldest in Greece, was annihilated.
