City of vineyards at the foot of the Mátra mountains, Gyöngyös sees its Jews gathered in a closed quarter then in a brickyard, with those from villages in the district, before the convoys.
Gyöngyös, at the foot of the Mátra, sustained a community that lived from viticulture, the wine trade, and craftsmanship, with its Orthodox synagogue and its Neolog synagogue, its schools and its societies. After the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the city and district were confined to a ghetto, then gathered in the camps of Heves County. The convoys departed in early summer toward the extermination center in Upper Silesia; the community was destroyed.
