A town on the great plain, Békéscsaba sees its community gathered in a tobacco factory on the periphery, with those from the towns of the county, before the summer convoys.
Békéscsaba, the county seat of the southeastern plain, was home to a community that lived from the grain trade, mills, and crafts, with its domed Neolog synagogue and its schools. Following the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the city and of Békés county were confined to a ghetto, then assembled in the camps of the region. The convoys departed in early summer toward Austria and toward the extermination center of Upper Silesia; the community disappeared.
