City on the northern border, Balassagyarmat sees its community penned in a very narrow closed quarter, then taken by convoys to the death camp.
Balassagyarmat, the county seat of Nógrád, maintained an ancient and sizable community, Orthodox for the most part, with its great synagogue, its yeshiva, and its charitable institutions; the Jews formed a notable share of the population. Following the German occupation of Hungary, the authorities confined the community and the Jews of the county's villages within a ghetto established around the synagogue. The convoys departed in early summer toward the death center in Upper Silesia.
