The working-class quarter adjoining the station is enclosed by palisades and serves as an antechamber to the convoys: families are gathered there for a few days before being boarded.
The working-class neighborhood of Baron Hirsch, in Salonique, adjoins the train station. It is enclosed by fences in early spring and serves as an anteroom for the convoys: families gathered from the other neighborhoods are brought there, spend a few days crammed together, then cross the hundred meters separating them from the freight cars. The neighborhood bore the name of a philanthropist who had built homes for the poorest. Passing through Baron Hirsch became, for the community of Salonique, the final stage before departure, and the enclosure was emptied and filled again, convoy after convoy.
