After Italian withdrawal, arrests strike the city and county of Nice where thousands of Jews had taken refuge.
After the withdrawal of Italian troops from the Alpes-Maritimes in early September, the German police entered Nice, where thousands of Jews had taken refuge under the Italian occupation, which had protected them from deportation. Teams operated in the streets, train stations, and hotels, checking passersby based on their appearance and papers. Those apprehended were taken to the Hôtel Excelsior and then transferred to Drancy. The hunt continued throughout the hinterland until the Liberation.
