City in the Évros valley, Didymoteicho saw its Jewish families arrested on the same day as those throughout the occupied province and taken toward the death camp, by river then by rail.
Didymoteicho, on the Évros, was home to one of the oldest Romaniote communities in Thrace, whose presence dated back to the Byzantine centuries and which had preserved its own customs alongside the Sephardic families who arrived later. The city had been under Bulgarian administration since the partition of Greece. In early March, the occupation authorities gathered the Jews of Didymoteicho, detained them for several days, then directed them toward the Danube transit points; the convoys departed for the death center. The community never recovered.
