Wieliczka, famous for its salt mines on the outskirts of Cracovie, was home to a community that had obtained the right of residence only late in history and had settled around the market square. During the occupation, the Jews of the town and surrounding localities were gathered together. In the summer, the population was assembled on a field at the edge of the city and sorted: men deemed fit for labor were sent to the region's work camps, while the others were taken to Bełżec. Children and the elderly were killed on the spot. The selection at Wieliczka, carried out in a single day, brought to an end a Jewish presence spanning several centuries in the city of the salt mines.
