Capital of the mountainous Podhale, whose community is taken in summer to the Bełżec killing camp.

Nowy Targ, capital of the Podhale at the foot of the Tatras, had a recent but prosperous community, oriented toward the timber and cattle trade. From the very first months of the occupation, the region was declared a German settlement zone and the Jews of the mountain villages were pushed toward the city. In the summer, the closed quarter was emptied: the inhabitants were taken to the station and transported to Bełżec, following a selection on the square during which the sick were shot. The men held back for labor were employed on the road construction sites of the Tatras, then deported. The Podhale lost all Jewish presence.
