The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the Chortkiv ghetto

1942-1943·Chortkiv

Toll
plusieurs milliers de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The ghetto of the city in Galician Podolia is emptied through successive operations, its inhabitants sent to the death camp in the Lublin region or shot on the spot; the final operation leaves only hideouts and those who fled.

Chortkiv, in eastern Galicia, was home to a community renowned for its Hassidic court. Its destruction unfolded over nearly two years: successive raids, deportations to the Bełżec extermination center, executions in the Jewish cemetery and the nearby woods, until the liquidation of the ghetto. The last those in hiding were hunted down in the cellars and attics of the city.
