Chortkiv (Czortków) is a city in eastern Galicia known for having been the seat of an important Hasidic court founded by the Friedman dynasty in the nineteenth century. The Jewish community, which represented a substantial portion of the population, was almost entirely exterminated by the Einsatzgruppen and the Gestapo between 1941 and 1943.
