Stryj, in eastern Galicia, was a center of timber and oil trade. Its enclosed quarter gathered, in addition to its own inhabitants, the Jews from the localities of the valley.
It was emptied by successive convoys to Bełżec in the autumn, which spread the action over several weeks and left between each departure an interval during which work resumed. The last inhabitants would be killed on the spot or sent to the Janowska camp.
