Stryi (Stryj in Polish), an economic center of the oil-producing region of Galicia, harbored an active Jewish community since the 16th century. In the early 20th century, Jews represented about one third of the population and participated in the trade of petroleum and forest products. The Shoah swept away nearly the entire community, deported to Bełżec.
