Biała Podlaska, on the road from Warsaw to Brest, was home to a large community, endowed with houses of study and a network of artisans. A closed quarter was established there, into which the communities of the surrounding villages were pushed, along with Jews deported from the West. Hunger and typhus wrought devastation before any deportation. In the spring, the German authorities carried out the first major transport to Sobibór; a second convoy followed in the autumn, and the last inhabitants were taken to the transit camp at Międzyrzec Podlaski, from which the region's convoys departed. Those who attempted to reach the forests were hunted down by the gendarmerie and auxiliary units.
