City on the San, at the gates of the Carpathians, whose ghetto was emptied in autumn toward Bełżec, part of it shot on the spot.
Sanok, on the San River at the foot of the eastern Carpathians, was home to a large community, divided between Hassidim and assimilated circles, and endowed with its own schools and press. The city was first cut in two by the demarcation line between the German and Soviet armies, prompting some of the Jews to cross the river. Under the German occupation, an enclosed quarter was established, fed by the surrounding towns. In the autumn, the inhabitants were taken in convoys to Bełżec, following a selection that retained several hundred men for the Zasław labor camp, which was liquidated shortly afterward.
