The Shoah (1939–1945)
Liquidation of the Stoubtsy ghetto
automne 1942·Stoubtsy
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
A town on the Niemen where the border once passed, Stoubtsy sees its closed quarter emptied by an autumn roundup, the inhabitants led to the river's edge and shot down, some making their way to the woods.
Stoubtsy, on the Niemen, lived off timber floating and grain trading. Its community is locked in, put to forced labor, then led in groups toward pits dug at the edge of town; a few young people join the partisan detachments forming in the nearby forests.
