Częstochowa, a pilgrimage city in central Poland, was home to a large Jewish community and a textile industry that employed a portion of its inhabitants. The closed quarter had been established there in the spring of the previous year.

The liquidation was carried out during the autumn holidays, a period chosen because the population was gathered together; the convoys departed for Treblinka. A small labor quarter was maintained afterward around the factories, where a resistance group would form the following year.
