It is from Poprad station, at the foot of the High Tatras, that at the end of winter departs the first convoy organized by the Slovak State: young women gathered in a barracks in the town, who had been told of a few months of work, and who are taken to the death camp of Upper Silesia.
Poprad, at the foot of the High Tatras, was home to a more recently established community than those in the east of the country, one born of the railway and mountain tourism. It was from its station that, in the spring, the first deportation convoy of the Slovak state departed: it carried young women gathered from across the region under the pretext of compulsory labor. Further convoys followed, transporting the families of Poprad and the surrounding towns toward the extermination centers of the General Government. The community did not survive the year.
