The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the ghetto of Nowy Sącz

Août 1942·Nowy Sącz

Toll
~16 000

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The ghetto is emptied toward Bełżec in three convoys, after shootings at the Jewish cemetery.

Nowy Sącz, at the foot of the Carpathians, was a renowned Hassidic center and a town where Jews made up a third of the population. The closed quarter had been established there the previous year and swelled by those expelled from neighboring villages.

The liquidation takes place at the end of summer: shootings at the Jewish cemetery precede the departure of three convoys to Bełżec. The work certificates issued to craftsmen protect those who hold them for only a few weeks more.
