Nowy Sącz (Tsanz or Sanz in Yiddish), a city in western Galicia, is the birthplace of the Hassidic dynasty of Sanz, founded by Rabbi Haim Halberstam in the 19th century — one of the most influential in the Polish Hassidic world, whose branches (Klausenburg, Bobov, etc.) continue to this day. The Jewish community was destroyed during the Shoah; some of its descendants reconstituted the dynasty in Israel and the United States.
