The Shoah (1939–1945)
Liquidation of the Berezne ghetto
août 1942·Berezne
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The community, swelled by Jews rounded up in the surrounding villages, was annihilated during the summer by pits dug near the city; craftsmen retained for the occupier's workshops were shot a few weeks later.
In Berezne, Jews confined to a closed quarter since spring are led in August toward pits situated at the edge of a nearby forest. Inhabitants from the surrounding hamlets had been brought there in the preceding days, so that the pit received the Jewish population of the entire district. A few families hidden by neighbors would survive until the liberation of the region.
