The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the Lyakhavichy ghetto

été 1942·Lyakhavichy

Toll
plusieurs milliers de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The ghetto is liquidated during the summer; the inhabitants are shot on the outskirts of the city and the few workers retained for the workshops are killed in autumn, ending a Jewish presence of several centuries.

The enclosed quarter of Lyakhavichy, in the Baranovitchi region, is liquidated during the summer. The inhabitants are gathered in the early morning and led toward pits dug by prisoners a few days earlier. A small group of workers is kept alive to complete ongoing labor, then shot in turn at the end of the season. A few men hidden in attics will make their way to the marshes and survive among the partisans.
