The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the Doubno ghetto

Oct. 1942·Doubno

Toll
plusieurs milliers

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The last inhabitants of the ghetto are shot in pits on the periphery.

Doubno, in Volhynia, had seen the greater part of its community shot the previous year. A reduced closed quarter still subsisted there, populated mainly by craftsmen and workers holding work certificates.

It was liquidated in the autumn, its last inhabitants led to the pits on the outskirts. It was at Doubno that a German engineer, Hermann Graebe, witnessed an execution of which he later gave, at the Nuremberg trials, a written deposition that has remained famous.
