The Shoah (1939–1945)
Massacre of Varena
septembre 1941·Varena
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
In this village of the pine groves of Dzukija, the Jewish population of Varena is assembled on orders from local auxiliaries, led outside the town, and shot at the edge of prepared pits.
Varena, in the heart of the forests of Dzoukija, sees its community rounded up in the very first weeks of the occupation. The inhabitants are led to a nearby clearing and shot by auxiliary detachments from the neighboring town, with the participation of part of the local population.
