The Shoah (1939–1945)

Massacre of Plungė

12-15 juil. 1941·Plungė

Toll
~1 800 morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

First confined in the synagogue and in barns, the entire community is led in groups to the place called Kaušėnai, at the edge of the city, and shot at the edge of pits prepared in advance.

The Jews of Plungė are locked in the synagogue for nearly two weeks, without water or food, before being led in groups to the Kaušėnai forest and shot at the edge of prepared pits. The operation is carried out largely by Lithuanian auxiliaries, under the direction of the security police; it is one of the first in which an entire community, women and children included, is annihilated in Lithuania.
