The internees assigned to Kenadsa descend into the coal mine that feeds the southern line. Dust, cave-ins, and the absence of medical care mark the accounts of survivors; work underground had been stipulated in none of their sentences, since they had never been tried. The Kenadsa camp falls under the same apparatus as the neighboring earthwork sites, but the output demanded there is that of an industrial operation. The men are counted by the cage brought back up.
