A small town in Galicia where Jewish life had been built around its market and ancient synagogue, Brzezany sees its population registered, then led in columns toward the surrounding woods where pits had been dug.
Brzezany, a fortified market town in Galician Podolia, was home to a community that lived by fairs, tanning, and small trade. From the very first weeks of the occupation, the men were rounded up and led into the nearby woods; the others were subjected to forced labor, then confined to an enclosed quarter before the deportation convoys. The stone synagogue, one of the most remarkable in the region, was ransacked.
