The Shoah (1939–1945)

Destruction of the community of Berezhany

1941-1943·Berezhany

Toll
plusieurs milliers de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

Shootings at the town's edge, deportations to the extermination camp, then liquidation of the ghetto: the community disappears in less than two years, and the great synagogue is left in ruins.

Berezhany, in eastern Galicia, saw its community destroyed in stages, from the first executions of the summer of the invasion to the liquidation of the ghetto. The inhabitants were shot in groups in the Lisniki forest or deported to the Bełżec extermination center. The last survivors hid in the surrounding villages; almost none returned.
