The camp in the Lower Pyrenees receives the Badische and Palatinate Jews expelled from the Reich, then serves as a reservoir for deportations.
Opened in the Basses-Pyrénées to shelter refugees from the Spanish Civil War, the Gurs camp became in the autumn an internment site for Jews from the regions of Baden and the Palatinate, whom the Reich expelled from one day to the next beyond its western border. Wooden barracks, mud, cold, and hunger killed several hundred internees during the first winter. Two years later, the camp served as a reservoir for convoys heading north toward Drancy, and then toward Upper Silesia. The cemetery bordering the site is today the only visible witness to what took place there.
