The Shoah (1939–1945)
Kristallnacht in Hamburg
9-10 nov. 1938·Hambourg
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
The great synagogue of Bornplatz and the prayer houses of Hamburg quarters are ransacked; the men arrested are directed to Sachsenhausen.
In Hamburg, the places of worship of the German and Portuguese communities are set on fire or demolished during the night following the call. The shops in the city center are ransacked and the men rounded up. The community of the great port, which had been for generations of emigrants the last stop before departure, loses its institutions and the bulk of its heritage there.
