Jews and Poles taking refuge in the church massacred
In Tetiïv, the Jews and the Poles took refuge together in the church, hoping that the place would hold back the assailants. It did not hold them back: the bands forced the doors and massacred those who had locked themselves inside.
The episode became one of the most cited of the Koliivshchyna, because it destroyed at a stroke the illusion upon which the security of these small towns rested — the idea that a sanctuary, a wall, or a protector was sufficient. The memory of it would remain vivid in the Memory of the communities of the right bank, and it would return, in 1919 and in 1941, each time the same land experienced the same collapse.
