The Bar Confederation raised its banner against the king and against the Russian guarantee; its war lasted for years and was waged largely at the expense of the populations through which it passed. In the Jewish communities of Podolia and Volhynia, the confederates levied forced contributions, plundered warehouses, took hostages, and killed. Unlike the Koliivshchyna, which was an explosion, this was a continuous exaction, spread across the entire duration of the confederation, and it struck the same regions that the peasant uprising had already ruined. The kehillot, indebted since the suppression of the Council of Four Lands, no longer had any body to negotiate with nor funds to ransom their own.
