the city taken by the Haidamaks, the Jewish quarter destroyed
Bohouslav, on the Ros, was taken during the summer and its Jewish quarter destroyed. The repression that followed was carried out by Russian troops, who had entered Poland to fight the Bar confederates and then turned against the haidamaks who had invoked the name of the empress: Zalizniak was arrested by trickery and sent to Siberia, Gonta handed over to the Poles and put to death by torture. None of this restored to the communities what they had lost. Those on the right bank took a generation to recover, and the memory of the uprising passed into the narratives and elegies composed in the years that followed.
