The Koliivshchyna is the deadliest of the Haidamaka uprisings. The bands of Maksym Zalizniak seized the towns of the right bank, Lissianka and Fastiv among them; the Jewish communities were massacred there alongside the Poles, with no difference in religious affiliation making any distinction in the fate reserved for either.
The uprising combined social revolt, confessional war between Orthodox and Uniates, and the collapse of Polish authority. Jews were caught as the exposed third party: too closely tied to the nobility to be spared by the peasants, too foreign to be defended by it. It would take the intervention of Russian troops to stop the bands.
