the Jews sheltering in the synagogue are burned alive
In the month of March of the following year, at Tetiev, the Jews who had taken refuge in the synagogue were burned alive inside it, the building having been set on fire around them.
The town had already witnessed a similar massacre during the Koliivshchyna, a century and a half earlier, when those who had taken refuge in the church were killed. The repetition of the place and the method is no coincidence: it is the same collapse of authority in the same region, and the same reflex of the inhabitants to seek refuge in a sanctuary that is no sanctuary at all.
