copies seized from synagogues and burned

After the disputation of Lwów, where the Frankists had upheld against the rabbis the accusation of ritual murder, the auto-da-fé of the Talmud is renewed at Kamieniec Podolski: copies seized from the synagogues are burned on the orders of the bishop.

The episode has this particular quality: the accusation comes from within the Jewish world — from the disciples of Jacob Frank, in the process of conversion, who offer the Church the argument it had been seeking. The community finds itself attacked by a messianic dissidence and by ecclesiastical authority at once, with no recourse against either.
