The Jews were expelled from Kamianets-Podilskyï during the Khmelnytsky wars, and access to the city was thereafter forbidden to them.
The fortress commanded Podolia and the road to Moldavia; its garrison and burghers obtained from the king a privilege excluding Jews, which held for a long time. It is near this city that, a century later, the dispute between rabbis and Frankists would take place, culminating in yet another burning of the Talmud.
