The Jewish quarter of Écija was attacked during the wave of thirteen ninety-one.
It was in Écija that Ferrán Martínez, archdeacon of the place, had preached for years against the Jews, demanding the destruction of their synagogues and defying the orders of the king as well as those of his archbishop. The regency of Castile, weakened by the king's minority, could neither silence him nor prevent his sermons from unleashing, from Seville, the wave that swept away the Jewish communities throughout the country.
