In Cologne, the community was destroyed even though the city council had sent a letter to neighboring towns warning them against the accusation of poisoning the wells, which it considered a fable.

This letter exists. It proves that disbelief was possible and that it was expressed in writing, at the very moment, by a significant urban authority. The argument that one could not have known therefore does not hold: people knew, they wrote it down, and yet they burned regardless.
