The community attacked

The community of Bamberg was attacked during the Armleder massacres. The episcopal city housed an ancient Jewish quarter, clustered around its synagogue and its school.

Bamberg was one of those cities where the prince-bishop protected the Jews on his own account, against the burghers who envied them and against the bands from the surrounding countryside. The protection held better there than in neighboring towns, but the community was nonetheless struck, and would be struck more gravely during the Black Death.
