Bamberg, an episcopal city in Franconia, lost its community in the summer of Rintfleisch. As elsewhere, the accusation of host desecration served as a pretext, and as elsewhere the bishop could not or would not restrain the band.

The common feature of these massacres is that they followed the trade routes: the mob moved from one town to the next within days, preceded by rumors of what it had done the day before. The communities thus knew what was coming, and yet had nowhere to go.
