the community attacked
The community of Carcassonne was attacked during the lepers' affair. The Languedoc was the breeding ground of the rumor, and it was from there that it spread northward through the kingdom.
The confessions on which it was founded were obtained under torture, and the documents produced — a purported letter from the king of Granada — were fabricated. The rumor followed the main roads and the fairs, and claimed its first victims among the most vulnerable before turning against the Jews, who had the advantage, in the eyes of their accusers, of being solvent.
