L'un des grands rabbins du Yémen au XIXe siècle, il dirigea la yeshiva centrale de Sanaa et fut un guide de la communauté de Kawkaban. Il eut pour disciples Rabbi Shalom Alshich (futur grand rabbin des Yéménites de Jérusalem) et Rabbi Abraham al-Naddaf. Son œuvre halakhique et exégétique fait référence dans la tradition yéménite.
