Né Uriel Heilperin à Varsovie, il hébraïsa son nom en Shelach, puis prit le pseudonyme littéraire Yonatan Ratosh. Poète majeur de langue hébraïque, il publia son premier poème en 1926 et fonda en 1939 le mouvement « cananéen », rejetant à la fois la religion et le nationalisme juif classique.
