Né au Caire dans la famille juive Harari (fils de Sir Victor Harari Pacha, haut financier du royaume d'Égypte, et d'Emma Aghion). Collectionneur et savant de l'art islamique — son nom reste attaché au « trésor Harari » (Harari Hoard) d'orfèvrerie médiévale — il contribua à l'historiographie de l'art persan.
