Aïeul du Hida (Rabbi Chaim David Azoulay), il naquit à Fès et s'établit à Hébron au début du XVIIe siècle. Ses écrits sombrèrent en mer lorsque le navire qui les transportait fit naufrage. En souvenir de ces manuscrits perdus, il signait ses écrits d'un dessin en forme de bateau.
