Né à Polonnoïe (Volhynie). Figure majeure du modernisme yiddish (groupe de Kiev avec Hofstein et Kvitko ; anthologie expressionniste « Di Chaliastre », Varsovie 1922). Installé en URSS en 1926, très prolifique. Membre du Comité antifasciste juif, exécuté le 12 août 1952 (« Nuit des poètes assassinés »).
