Juif hongrois-américain, Albert B. and Bernice Cohen Professor de littérature hébraïque médiévale et de bibliographie juive au JTS. Bibliothécaire du JTS de 1964 à 1987, il a dirigé la reconstruction de la bibliothèque après l'incendie de 1966. Maître du piyyut et de la liturgie, il a beaucoup publié sur la poésie liturgique ashkénaze et les manuscrits hébreux.
