Critique d'art victorien et édouardien prolifique, rédacteur en chef du Magazine of Art (1887–1904) et de The Connoisseur. Il publie une histoire du magazine Punch, la première biographie de John Everett Millais et une enquête détaillée sur les portraits de Shakespeare. Né à Londres, benjamin des huit enfants d'Adam Spielmann (1812–1869), banquier issu de Schokken (Posnanie) et marié à une sœur de Samuel Montagu.
